Did you ever stop to think what you would do if the upper speed limit was raised by 10? I bet you a million dollars you'd still overgo the limit simply because it is the limit.
Tell your 'that cop is an ass because he gave that guy a ticket for speeding' to my two friends who were wrapped around a tree because some speeding idiot thought it would be great to pass a truck going at the speed limit, but since the speed limit where I live is already at the peak of normal cars he could only push 10mp/h more than the truck... I hope you know where I am hinting at.

The fact is that the limits are already pretty generous and that it's human.fucking.nature to STILL want to overgo the limit even if it was higher. It is also human nature to be sure of ones self when completely intoxicated and it is also human nature to question authority simply because they had no personal hand in electing that authority.

Now step over your instincts and bloody narrow point of view and think about it a few more minutes before posting shit.

If they catch me doing something, then fair game. They won that time, I might get away with it another time. I respect them as doing their job and others as doing theirs. Both sides have assholes and nobody likes those people, but that's not saying they're all assholes. I've met numerous officers who were pretty decent guys and let me off once they decided I wasn't as much of a problem as someone else they could be dealing with ( ie: public intoxication but quietly walking home. ). Some were just plain jackasses and went way out of line ( ie: trying to sleep with someone's girlfriend.).

I think its hilarious how everyone is saying that cops are huge dicks. It's not a customer service job, people. It's one of the only jobs where you're allowed to be honest pretty much 100% of the time. Maybe the guys threatening to shoot are kind of pushing the limit, but for the most part I think I prefer our officers having some balls and being dicks. You know that customer that really made you angry when you worked retail as a teenager? He acted the same way to a cop, and it got him a bigger fine because cops are allowed to be dicks.

A student at a local college punched a cop recently. She is facing felony charges. A year ago there was a video of a cop lifting a handicapped man out of his wheelchair and dropping him on the ground. The cop was merely suspended from police work.

If you truly want to argue that the system is not fucked, I suggest you go to a grizzly bear den and see how much it cares about your position.

Some cops are nice, some are assholes. I've had many incidents with the police and I can personally say, some cops are awesome. Albeit, some are total jerks too. Really just depends on who the cop is, how their day is going, how you conduct yourself, and most importantly what it is you did wrong.

I'm a suburban white kid, and I've had thousands of opportunities to say no to drugs. I just choose not to. I just learned how to hide my stash. been pulled over and searched 4 times in my life. Talked my way out of the first time and learned not to make the same mistake ever again.

If you're talking about the States, when the speed limit was 10 mph more, the vehicles were smaller on average and were significantly less powerful. Despite this, there were still more accidents and fatalities than we have now (by percentage).

The only reason that there are "more" now is because there are more vehicles on the road. The percentage has actually dropped.

i don't blame cops for acting the way they do sometimes. i work retail and these customers piss me off to the point where i wanna tell them how i feel, but i can't because i have to put on the fake smile and be chip cheery. i know if i were a cop i'd be a bitch, but i wouldn't go as far as most. some take their authority to the extreme. i can't imagine what they have to go through everyday if i get pissed at the normal customer wanting to know why we don't have their dog's favorite food.

i find that -from empyrical knowledge AND first hand accounts from my cousin, a patrolman for the Columbus, OH PD- most cops are dicks because the people they pull over are either dicks to them, complain about being caught speeding/running stop signs, make lame excuses, etc, etc, etc. i also find that if you assert your rights while at the same time being courteous and polite, you will never have a problem...unless your lucky officer really is on a power trip...then you just have to grin and bear it...getting all bent out of shape while an officer writes you a ticket is NOT going to help things...you can't talk your way out of a ticket, so dont bother. i also find that since most cops are so used to people making lame excuses for why they violated traffic regs, if you answer their question "do you know why i pulled you over" truthfully, you are 10x more likely to get off with either a written or verbal warning. sure, you waive your 5th amendment rights by doing that, but its better than a $100 or $200 ticket.

cops are generally pretty kool. One of my best friends lives next door to me and his step dad is a cop. They are nice people as long as your not a dick and they are doing their job.

but on the opposite side some cops do abuse their power. heres just one small example
big football game at my school and after it was over everyone was waiting in traffic in the school's parking lot. My dad and I were at the red light to turn out when we heard sirens. A cop car from the game was haulin ass through the parking lot and passed everyone waiting at the stop light then turned onto the main road out of the traffic. As soon as he got there he turned off his siren and returned to regular speed. That was uncalled for

Cops are human. You will have people abuse their power no matter WHAT profession you're looking at. Lawyers, politicians, cops, anything and anyone anywhere. Cops do an especially dangerous job- they deal with people who break the law and sometimes will do anything they can to avoid getting caught- even shooting another person. These guys put their lives on the line and they don't do it for a lot of money either.

And for all of you who say you don't like cops- why? Because you think its unfair that you get caught for breaking the law and putting the rest of us in danger?? Don't be so full of yourselves.

My wife is angry that I get pulled over about once every 6 months, for doing about 15 over... or more. The reason she is angry is because I don't get speeding tickets!!! You have to polite and sincere when you are dealing with police officers. They are on power trips on occasion, but generally speaking, even people on power trips can decent when you do unto them. I usually tell them I didn't realize I was going quite THAT fast. Other times I have said I was just in a hurry and even pointed out that no one else was around me for me to judge my speed off of. Believe it or not, most cops pull over people who have no reason going the speed that they are going. REALLY, who SHOULD a cop pull over- a corvette going 95, or a blazer going 90? The corvette is at least designed to go that fast.

Here's a tip jerks: Don't break the law, and be halfway decent to any cops you run into, and 95% of them will be decent right back. Really. Cops are not the problem, the legislatures giving officers a mandate to excercise restrictive control over matters which belong in the hands of individuals are the problem. Cops have a job. They are doing it, and when they do it to you, it is not out of some personal hate against you/your race/your [insert characteristic trait] its because you broke the law and they are bound by oath to uphold the law (regardless of whether they agree with it or not). Seatbelt tickets are a small example, sure seatbelts save lives. But why is that a concern of the government? Money for one, insurance companies have it, and if you die they have to pay out. Seatbelts might save lives, but 400,000 people a year die from tobbaco, while only 40,000 die from traffic accidents. Once again, the problem is not with cops, it is with greedy politicians who bow to the will of the All Mighty Dollar and forget the people and what they want and need.

I hate cops, i have nothing on my criminal record, and the only school offense i had was a suspension back in 8th grade.

Sure, you can all talk about how horrible the police are, but if you worked the second most stressful job in the country (second only to The President in the study I read), a job so stressful it needs its own special branch of psychology to deal with the numerous problems from constant exposure to the dark side of humanity...

Anyways. Be glad they have a sense of humor. If you're having as many problems with the cops as you claim to, here's something to try: Stop being such a colossal dick. The very phrase "I hate cops" speaks to me of the very 'us vs. them' mentality that makes all members of law enforcement into enemies. If you're polite, not committing a felony, and willing to see a police officer as a guy with a mortgage doing his job, they're more interested in just getting the ticket done and returning to their crossword puzzles.

You're basing your opinions on other's stories about cops. That's just biased. Normally when people tell stories they tell them so that they themselves look better. I know I've been guilty of it as I'm sure most people are.

And you're basing your assumptions based on a TV show. TV is not real life. Reality TV is not real life. TV is meant to sell. Do you think the show would still be on the air if most of the cops did a car stop or whatever and said "Excuse me sir, but what you were doing is wrong. Please sir, do not do that again." No it wouldn't sell because people don't want to see that. They want to see the fights, and hookers, and the outlandish remarks

Another point to make is that you have no idea the situation surrounding these comments. You have no idea as to how they were said, if they were joking or not. You're just assuming the worst.

Thirdly, I've been pulled over 3 times. All three times I've gotten out of the ticket. You know why? Because I was courteous to him. I disobeyed the law and he caught me. If I were to sit there in my car fuming that I got caught for doing soemthing as minor as speeding, and then yell at the guy calling him a pig and telling him off, then I was sure as hell going to get a ticket. Especially being a young driver.

Lastly, my dad was a police officer. I work with cops all the time at my self defense school, I work with the police at my college, and I plan on becoming a police officer after college. Being a cop is a very hard job, you put your life on the line every day and most people don't even thank you for it. There's dicks out there like the people on here who think cops are just idiots and curse them out.

You are a public servant and the only requirement is that you have never been arrested. Clearly you don't need to be educated because college is not a pre-requisite to being a cop. Actually, a lot of places do make you have at least an Associate's Degree to become a cop.

You must live in some podunk little town if you really think being a cop isn't hard.

You wanna look at dead and mutilated bodies? You wanna hear some girl sobbing her way through how she got raped? You wanna get shot at because some douchebag decided the law didn't apply to him?

My dad is a retired cop. He has a Master's in Criminal Psychology. While he was on the force, he had his knee shattered when a perp decided to crush it between his car and another. He had to kill a guy that was going after his partner with a butcher knife. He was a crisis negotiator and helped to free dozens of hostages. And he had to live with the knowledge that he might not come home to his wife and children on any given night.

So next time you want to say that being a cop isn't hard, imagine that YOU are the one that has to tell a distraught mother that her daughter had been brutally raped and butchered.

Imagine you're the one who has to repeatedly see people as smears on the pavement because someone decided that traffic laws are arbitrary.

In essence, imagine you're the one that constantly has to deal with the dregs of society, only to be mocked, scorned, and spit upon by the very people you are trying to keep safe. Easy as pie, right?

Personally, I'm a relatively new driver. Been Driving for only three years now, but the one time I have been pulled over was for a stupid reason, in my opinion. I didn't come to a complete stop sign that has no cross traffic. The only thing that I was afraid of was I had my friend in the car and I hadn't had my license for a year yet and in California that's against the law to drive minors within a year of getting your license. But the cop was way cool and let me go without a ticket. My friends however drive 50 in 25 speed limits and they get pulled over and get tickets like they deserve. Like what Henry Killiam said it just depends on what you did and how their day is going and how you treat them. You guys should THINK before you either break the law or cuss out a cop or something. It could save you some money.

Look I've been a police officer for 26 years. Have I been an asshole sure. Have I actually been thanked for writing a ticket more times than not. The bottom line is in our line of work we are in CHARGE of what ever the situation is, we have to be in charge to protect you and ourselves. If you interpret that as being an asshole so be it if your dumb ass and mine are still going home at the end of the shift job well done. In 26 years I have been held hostage by someone with an assault rifle had my back broke trying to make an arrest, been spit, pissed and puked on. And regardless of what you call me I am going to come and do the best I can to protect you or just let you cry on my shoulder after I had to tell you your teenage son died in a car crash. So take your best shot I still will be the parent that looks under your bed or in your closet when everything is creeping in on you.

Cops are generally nice people, however their are in fact assholes who give them all a bad name. Something to consider however is that their is the "blue wall of silence". By all means, I support police for the most part, if I am being pulled over, I probably was speeding. However on the off chance that a cop does do something severely over the line (excessive force, discrimination etc.) the odds of justice being served is low.

The union for example will fight tooth and nail to protect its members. As well, the crown prosecutor is the one who must file the charges (at least here in Canada) and if the crown goes against the police it makes it quiet difficult / a lot of backlash. As an institution, the police are above the law, and essentially able to get away with things that normal citizens could not.

Now my final point: This only applies in a tiny number of cases!!!! The number of police officers who do act in this way are GREATLY out numbered by the number of police officers who are legitimately looking out for the public good.

Not every cop is on the S.W.A.T. team, so drop that stressful job shit. There's no stress in writing tickets, and busting stoners. Last month a man was riding a bike through the parking lot in front of my apartment, a cop pulled up next to him and asked hi, what he was doing. The guy explained he just left his friends apartment (which he had), and was on his way home. The cop then asked him to take him to his friends apartment so he could ask his friend some questions. That is fucked up, the guy stopped for riding his bike. Then the cop forced his way into the guys apartment, and started looking for anything he could to make an arrest. He gave up after twenty minutes or so, but that is the main reason I don't like cops. I could give a shit about all my tickets.

Its pretty fucking obvious, you break the law, you suffer the consequences. I understand some may think laws are meant to be broken, but give the guys a break. Its just like if you were doing your job correctly and some random person calls you a fucking dick because you did something right. GIVE THEM THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE! I've been pulled over numerous occasions and not once did I doubt what they were doing. And yes, some are corrupt, but that doesn't mean they all are. The whole speeding ticket thing has nothing to do with the police officers that are charged with writing them. Our speed limits were written 40+ years ago, when cars had drum brakes, narrow bias-ply tires, and simple suspensions. The engineers that designed our highways expected speed limits of 75, and that was in the '60s. The automobiles of today can safely do 85 MPH on today's superhighways. Enforcement of speed limits today has more to do with revenue production than safety. The actual issues that highway patrolmen should be concentrating on concern impeding the flow of traffic; left-lane squatters, cell-phone users, etc. If drivers obeyed the "drive right, pass left" laws that allow germany's autobahnen to flow along at 100 MPH, most of the other issues would work themselves out. People would not drive at "10 MPH over the speed limit", they would drive at the highest speed they were comfortable at for everyday driving (mine happens to be 90). The system would work itself out, as people will not drive at a sustained speed that makes them uncomfortable. Then we could allow the police officers that are currently wasting their time sitting in speed traps to use their time more productively; that is, looking for actual criminals.

There are good and bad cops. Not all of them are assholes. I'm sure some of those comments were said in jest. I've met some cool police officers. They aren't assholes just because they do their job.
I've been arrested so I'm not biased...and I still think that not all cops are assholes.

Geez, guys, cut the cops some slack.

To even become a cop these days, you have to compete with between 300 to upwards of 900 people for every available job slot, go through a vigorous weeding process that will make your head spin, a boot camp-like academy, and then you get tossed out onto the street where you see the worst humanity has to offer day in and day out for your entire professional life, work through most, if not all the holidays in your first 10 years or so, and wonder if you're coming home at all that night far more often than you'd like. All this for somewhere between $35 and $50k to start and maybe $75-90k when you retire in an environment where the public second-guesses your every move, and most people hate you for catching them doing something that's against the law and then holding them to account for it. Quite frankly, combat soldiers often have it easier.

I know this because for a while, I wanted to be one. Then I realized that IT was easier to get into, more lucrative, and more conducive to a happy personal life.

Yeah, it hardens them a bit.

Cut 'em some slack.

Yeah, a lot of them are pretty hard, cynical, and short on social graces by the time they've been on the force for a few years, but that same guy who treated you like a jerk would probably take a bullet for you. He just doesn't want to take a bullet FIRED by you. Not today. So he's going to come on very strong and harsh, make a few witty threats, and send you on your way. He's also going to make the experience unpleasant on purpose, because if it sucks dealing with him, maybe you'll think twice about doing whatever got his attention in the first place.

I believe all drug laws and personal safety laws should be stricken from the book. The only reason they are there is to make money for the government. Do you really believe that they really give a damn about your personal welfare? No, not at all. It all comes down to money. Every person is numbered (SS#) and that number is put into an equation to figure out what your average expected monetary gain for the government would be. This is your work hours, and the taxes over your entire life. Say you get hurt, or killed, and cant work anymore. It botches their equation and fucks up the system. THIS is the only reason for these laws.

As for cops being dicks, yeah, they are for the most part. I gave up all hope with cops when I got held up at gunpoint in front of a club and the cops blamed me for being out late. I dont call the cops for shit anymore. I shoot first and explain later

On a side note, major highways should have a speed minimum, not a speed maximum. Most wrecks are caused by slow drivers. Grant you most fatalities from wrecks are from speed, but that should be a personal decision. According to statistics the Autobahn is one of the safest roads in the world to drive on.

haha yeh my husband was ticketed for speeding in a construction zone by one of those photo stop cameras. he said it was ridiculous. then while driving i watched this guy run a red turn signal and the camera went off. husband said it wasnt right and it "invades our freedom and liberty" i told him what if someone was walkin on the crosswalk and got hit by that a-hole. he said "its the principal of the thing" whatever. then i asked him what if we got rid of the cameras and put more cops on the street to catch these guys. then everyone would be pissed. i told him its common sense, that guy shouldnt be drivin that way and it "invades my freedom to drive in a safe environment" seriously....the light is red...you have to wait your friggin turn like the rest of us...it was nice to watch 3 ppl in a row get ticketed from those cameras turning when the light was red....

The simple fact is, most criminals are idiots. Hence the criminal part...anyway, I think that the majority of cops do what is well within the requirements and appropriate actions in order to enforce the law. They do their job. These comments are hilarious for the most part, and I bet that, within context, you guys would find that they were appropriate. I believe that most cops are fine people. Although I'm not naive enough to believe that they're ALL good. There is a bad apple in every bunch, and that doesn't just mean cops. It's that way with every type of job, because some people are just moronic @$$holes.

Not true in all cases. Take my mom for example. her good friend was dating a cop, who was an asshole, and my mom convinced her friend to break it off with the cop. Shortly thereafter, cops were harassing my mom for anything they could, eventually taking her to jail over us having a couple of bags of trash by our back door, citing it as a city ordinance violation. Let me reiterate. THEY TOOK HER TO JAIL. OVER 3 EFFING TRASH BAGS. ON OUR OWN PROPERTY. Some cops, really are just assholes.

The reason we think cops are assholes, is because usually they act like assholes. For example, I live in the meth capital of the U.S.A. But, instead of spending their time trying to solve the drug problem, I'm getting parking tickets because I was parked 2 inches to far away from the curb. Or my friend is getting pulled over for going 3mph over the speed limit. Or, it could be the fact that I have gotten two tickets in the last year, both of which I had to take to court and were thrown out because, gasp, there was actually no f'ing law against what I did, in fact the law explicitly states that what I did was OK. (Apparently, using a road that has just been built, that is going to be two lanes each way, can be used as if it's already a two lane road - I'm allowed to pass the van going 10mph). But yeah, being called a liar when I explained to the cop that what I'm doing is legal, and I know it is because I've already taken it to court, and asking him to please look it up before I get ANOTHER ticket and have to waste another day at court AGAIN, and then having him tell me he's not going to waste his time... that really made my day. Cops are such GREAT people. I think I'd rather fend for myself if someone ever tries to rob me, better than relying on our B.S. "justice" system.

Where I used to live, I'd support the cops... but since moving to Phoenix, I've found that, being Caucasian and small framed, for some reason, the cops here are just DICKS to me.
So long as I live in this city, I'll feel the need to fend for myself--it'll sound bigoted of me, but since I'm white, I can't expect any help from the cops here.
